The constellations in Hindu astrology
Ancient hindu astrology is
based upon the constellations and this is why it is so precise. Unlike western
astrology which is based upon the rotation of the sun and signs, the hindu
astrology has its foundation on the rotation of planets in the constellations
including Moon. Signs come later. The mahadasha, antara and pratyantara of the
planets depend upon the position of the moon in a particular constellation and
its quarter. There are 27 constellations ruled by the 9 planets and the dasha
of planets is fixed in the Indian dasha system, which is called - the
vimshottaridasha. here meaning of vimshottari is 120 years. Thus the dasha of
planets are based on the assumption that the average lifespan of humans is 120
years. Each sign has 3 constellations in it and there are 4 quarters of a
constellation. Thus each sign has 9 quarters of constellations. The
constellations, signs and division of quarters is as follows:

Each constellation is ruled
by a planet and each planet rules 3 constellations. Each planet has a fixed
Mahadasha, Antara, Pratyantaraas told earlier. It is as follows:
When we are born, each
planet is transiting in a particular constellation. The moon denotes mind. The
transit of moon in a particular constellation denotes some peculiar traits in
an individual. Thus a person born in satabhisha star will be different from
person born in krittika, not only this but a person born in satabhisha will be
different from a person born in swati - though both the stars are ruled by
Rahu. This is the preciseness of Hindu astrology.
